Personal Statement
1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
I’ve been enrolled in the Lindsay High School Leadership class for the second year now. Over the past year I have been contributing and helping build school spirit, as well as planning/organizing school events like; for example, Home coming week. A very traditional event. I, as well as my classmates, have solved disputes by having class meetings where we discuss and decide what’s best for the school/students. I have influenced students to have school spirit, participate in events, and even to join Leadership class. All by being a good leader and a role model.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
I have been playing soccer over the past 9 years, therefore I believe soccer is my greatest talent/skill. I have been a Lindsay High School varsity soccer player since my freshman year. My freshman year I got second top scorer of the team with 9 goals, in which I inspired many. I also had 2 winning goals, and an amazing stunner. Throughout my freshman year soccer season I was able to show my talent/skills and earned a starting forward position in playoffs. Sophomore year was a little rough though I managed to score 6 goals in total. The past 2015-2016 soccer season was my best. I got top scorer of the team and also overall league top scorer with 18 goals. As for this year, my goal is to play and win a Valley Championship.
5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
The most significant challenge I have faced was in 8th grade. I was told that I was in danger of not going on to High School due no work being done, which caused me to get behind pace. Therefore, as soon as my teacher told me I would be in danger of not going onto High School, I rapidly reacted and got to work. I made up school assignments due from the past until I caught up and got on pace. It took a lot of positive attitude and mentality to overcome this situation. I told myself day in and day out, “I could do this.” And I did. This challenge affected me in a good way. It taught me to always work hard, and never slack off. Since overcoming that challenge I have never before been in that situation again.
6. Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
My favorite academic subject is Foreign Language. I would say it’s my favorite because I get to learn how to speak in another language. Also because I would be able to communicate with others that speak the language I’m learning. In this case, French. I took French class for three years, which is now my career pathway. I learned the meanings and how to pronounce so many words; for example, Bonjour. Bonjour means Hi.
Personal Narrative
Ever since I was 11 years old my parents would take me field working during the summer, most of the time on picking oranges. “Estevan get up, It’s time for work!”, I would wake up to every morning around 4 or 4:30 a.m. “Ugh, this field working life sucks”, i'd harshly tell my parents. I absolutely hated waking up so early in the morning to go to work under the viciously burning hot sun. It was hell.
“Mijo, do you think we work in the fields because we like it?”, both my parents would constantly tell me. “We do it because money is a necessity in order to have food on the table.”
It seemed like I was never able to have a fun, enjoyable summer. I would always spend my summer days working. I was never able to stay up late using my phone, playing my Xbox, or even do late night bonding with my siblings. I had to be in bed by 9 p.m.
“Why don’t you guys get a better job?”, I would tell my parents. “Maybe like; open up a business/store.” My parents then would say, “Mijo, we have no other option. We had no education, and this is all we know.”
My parents always told me, “This is why you’re going to school, so you could get education and pursue a career of your choosing.”
I guess that was true, and they were right. I’m going to school now, so that one day in the future I no longer have to work in the fields. Possibly work as an officer, or become a businessman and live a better life. Not only that, but also help my parents out so they no longer have to work in the fields either. My parents have become my motivation to go and do good in school.
